We’re Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and we’re a suicide prevention charity. We host a helpline for people affected by suicide, as well as vital online resources for anyone who needs them.

Story

This summer, Margie, Hill Bill, Mary-Jane, Rich, George and Sam will be swimming, running, kayaking and cycling the great Kindrochit quadrathlon. The race is a day long endurance event that consists of a 0.8 mile swim in Loch Tay, followed by a 15 mile run over 7 Munroe’s followed by a 7 mile kayak and finally a 34 mile cycle ride round Loch Tay. It is billed as one of the UK’s hardest single day events.

The quad itself supports two fantastic charities that we will all be raising money for; Mary’s Meals and Mercy Corp. The links to support these charities and a little bit about the wonderful work they do is outlined below. For us however, it has become apparent that this event is an opportunity to talk about and support a cause, that is a little closer to home, and one that we have not done nearly enough to highlight and champion before; preventing suicide. As such our personal goal will be to raise money for CALM - a charity that aims to support people at times of personal crisis.

All 6 of us have lost friends and family to suicide, and this is an opportunity to talk about it, raise awareness and perhaps raise some money to support charities that help support people who are in such dreadful places mentally that they can’t see a positive way out.

Margie, M-J and George all lost their dad through suicide when we were 14,11 and 8 respectively (30 years ago plus 9 days to when we do this event). We were carried through by the incredible strength and love of our mum and our friends and family. It will always be a scar to own, but one that can perhaps help others too. Hill Bill, Rich and Sam have all recently lost colleagues and friends and never got to meet their father in law because of suicide.

As a family unit we realised that we haven’t done enough to talk about what has happened, and perhaps help others who are going through the same thing. This race serves as an opportunity to correct that. If you could spare any donation, it would mean the world to us.

Now things get a little complicated from here as we can't support more than one charity per just giving page, so....any donation you give here will go to the charity The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), CALM is leading a movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. The goal of CALM is to help tackle stereotypes of masculinity, suicide and male mental health, and to help us save lives. It would mean a great deal to all of us personally for you to support us.

We'd also ask that what you were going to give, you divide and visit our other fund-raising page at:

Donations here will support Mary's meals and Mercy Corp.

Mercy Corps, is a leading global organisation powered by the belief that a better world is possible. In disaster, in hardship, in more than 40 countries around the world, Mercy Corps partners to put bold solutions into action – helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within.

Mary's Meals, an international movement to set up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education.

Lots of love,

Margie, Hillbill, Mary-Jane, Rich, Sam and George. xxxx
