Malawi is located in south-central Africa and has a population of 11 million people, of whom, almost one in seven are living with HIV/AIDS, one of the worst rates of infection on the continent, and still rising. Each year 100,000 Malawian men, women and children die from the effects of the virus, and life expectancy is now less than 35 years. Abject poverty (the GDP is only around £400 a year per capita) means that the government is unable to stem the tide of human misery, so most of the relief work falls upon charities such as ActionAid.
