East Borneo COP Tour 2020 · 10 February 2020 to 17 February 2020 ·

Working to save entire, intact, functioning ecosystems for all wildlife and humanity. The original mission was expanded to include actions to protect Sumatran tigers, Sumatran elephants and indigenous communities who fall outside the protective umbrella of our orangutan conservation initiatives.

Story

Guys as much as we sometimes complain - we are the lucky ones and that comes with responsibilities. It's not only a global hype to save the environment, it's necessary and in some cases we're (almost) too late.

The past years I supported "The Orangutan Project(*)" and as you may know already, I am delighted to have the rare opportunity to visit the jungles of the Kutai National Park, East Borneo where I also visit an orangutan rescue centre to see firsthand the amazing work being done by TOP and its partners.

Please help me supporting them to save at least some parts of the rainforest & give Orangutans the chance to survive!

You want to learn more about the Orangutan? Here are some facts:

  • There are 3 species of Orangutans
All three species are critically endangered, with just over
100.000 Bornean, fewer than 14.000 Sumatran, and less than  800 Tapanuli orangutans left.
  • In local language they're called "tree people" for some reasons. They are genetically so close to us, they can almost be seen as people. And - who could have guessed that, they live in trees.
  • Like human children they need their mums. Young orangutans stay with their mother until they reach around 7 years old. They spend this time learning everything from her – including
     what’s good to eat.

  • They don't mind eating with their feet ;)

Why are they so endangered?

  1. Because of US! The destruction and degradation of the tropical rain forest, particularly lowland forest, in Borneo and Sumatra is the main reason orangutans are threatened with extinction. This has been caused primarily by human activity (intense legal logging, illegal logging, conversion of forest to palm oil plantations and timber estates, mining, clearing forest for settlements, and road construction) and also by large-scale fires
  2. Illegal animal trade is still a major threat
  3. They also are occasionally hunted and eaten

What can you do & why should you support my case?

Since we're busy selling IT probably none of us will go and volunteer in Indonesia directly ;). But what we can do is support those that really make a difference! I trust this organisation a lot and believe the money donated lands in the right hands. Please help me helping them!

  1. TOP gives young locals a legal job to support their families. They get hired not only in the camps but also as guards to protect the rainforest (Local wildlife units).
  2. TOP rescues Orangutans where needed. Out of private houses, saves them from fires and raises the little ones when their mothers got killed illegally. They're not tame animals that stay in the camp like in zoos. Every day they go to forest school and learn how to survive once they're old enough. They get medical treatment as well

(*)The Orangutan Project, a not-for-profit Australian organisation whose mission is to save the Bornean and Sumatran orangutan species from extinction by conserving the rainforest and reintroducing displaced orangutans into the wild.

I'm now trying to collect donation of $ 2.000,- (has nothing to do with my travel costs). All the money raised on this site goes directly to TOP.
