Story
Based in Deptford, the 999 Club is a small charity providing advice, advocacy, shelter, health checks & activities for homeless people. As well as people who sleep rough, they support those who are vulnerably housed, sofa surfing or living in temporary accommodation.
Although my running journey started several years ago, lockdown gave me the time to get out and explore London - and in the process I actually began to enjoy it! I've always dreamed of running the London Marathon but thought it was way beyond what I could ever do. I am thrilled to be supporting a charity just down the road from the start line. The months of training ahead are looking quite daunting, so any support you can give will really spur me on towards race day.
More on the 999 Club and their great work below:
People who have nowhere to live can go to their Gateway centre to have a shower, do their laundry and eat breakfast. They can also access healthcare from visiting nurses, mental health workers and health professionals.
The 999 Club Advice & Support service offers guidance so
that people can identify what help they are entitled to through housing
provision and benefits, and maintains strong links with private landlords willing to accept former rough sleepers as tenants. They also provide individual support, including accompanying people to appeals and court hearings.
Alongside these essentials, they offer an Employability
Support programme designed to help people build their self-esteem, access volunteering positions or internships and to get back into the workplace.
Anything you can give will help the 999 Club continue to provide these services to those who need it.
