Story

Demelza is very dear to my heart, since first opening my Daughters & i spent many happy times there.

When you hear the word hospice your mind conjures up thoughts of sadness, heartach & pain. Demelza however is a place full of fun, love & laughter.

My connection with Demelza started when the hospice first opened. My Daughter Sharna was 6yrs old & had a rare life limiting condition, when she was just 6 months old i was given the most heart breaking news, that she may not reach the age of 2. Sharna my beautiful girl who was always so full of happiness no matter how poorly she was had the most amazing ability to smile through no matter how tough her day. Each day was different & each day may well have been her last. So as you can imagine life was at times very stressful & full of worry. Sharna suffered frequent epeilptic seizures & repeated chest infections. I also had the huge anxiety of how am i going to cope when my little girl dies. Jade my elder Daughter has always been my normality in what was a very difficult & unusual way of life. When Demelza opened it gave Jade & i wonderful times together, we cherished our times at Demelza where we had the chance of doing normal everyday Mother  Daughter things. Where i was able to be Mummy to Sharna instead of 24hr nurse. Demelza has also been a sanctuary in times of turmoil, supporting me through the breakdown of my family unit & helping me with convalesence after an illness. When i had built up the courage to leave Sharna at Demelza, Jade & i were able to have quality time together, although it was always very difficult to leave Sharna i knew how much she loved going there & how important it was to also have time away to recharge my batteries. When at 12yrs Sharna finally gave up her fight for life it was only natural to want to return to our special place to say goodbye to our beautiful girl. Demelza supported me through the most utterly deverstating time of my life & helped me create a wonderful passing over for my very special girl who had always fought so hard to stay alive & had now chose to leave this world of ours. Sharna had the most lovely service in the  demelza chapel, it was such a beautiful send off. How do you put into words all that Demelza means to our family? To thank them as i have many many times is not enough. I have fund raised for such a worthy cause & recently had the most amazing oppurtunity to do that little bit extra & do something hands on by travelling to africa with a fantastic group of people from Demelza to raise money. I took part in a project working at Jon Hospice in Lusaka helping children who are living with HIV/AIDS & building a classroom onto an exsisting school. We also had the challenge of crossing the zambezi river, it really was a life enhancing experiance. I have since Sharnas passing dedicated my life to working with children that have rare conditions & have the absolute pleasure of working with the most wonderful children, i am very lucky to be a part of their lives. I always want to be able to give something back & this is my way of showing my gratitude to Demelza a place that "adds life to days when days cannot be added to life"...
