Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, in memory of Liz MacKean. At 52, Liz died after a stroke. She received first-class care at the William Drummond Unit at St George's Hospital, Tooting, South London. This is a specialised stroke unit, and the expertise and patient support are second to none.

My elder sister Liz was a brilliant person - a devoted mother, wife, daughter and sister. Liz was also a journalist through and through, of the highest integrity, probity and courage. Not only a tenacious story-teller, Liz loved people. And that shows. Putting people at ease, politicians, thought-leaders, and victims - who felt they had been failed or ignored. She really cared about those who placed such trust in her – and it drove her to dig and dig at the truth. She won seven awards for her outstanding journalism. Liz touched the lives of so many – many we’ll never know.

I am wild-camping the length of Wales with Liz's two teenage children, Alex and Will, for eight days in May to raise funds for the acute care of stroke victims. This was land Liz loved. Using tarps, maps and compass, straying off path where necessary, this fund-raising hike is an expedition - and we will begin in Snowdonia, journeying mostly on foot through Wales to the Gower, where Liz and her family have spent much time. Friends and family can meet us along the way, walk with us for a section, or cheer us on.

Donating through this JustGiving page - to support the charity behind the William Drummond ward at St George's Hospital is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
