Story

We are embarking on this race in memory of Marylou Murray who was a wonderful sister to Linus  and an amazing mother-in-law to Malick. Marylou used to run the Liverpool Half alongside us and we will be missing her this year.

Marylou was an outstanding General Practitioner and one of the most unique and inspirational people we have ever met. A true force of nature. She always kept pushing herself in any aspect of her life. She excelled at anything she would take on. Be it running, cycling, spinning, yoga, dancing, joking, gardening, cleaning or conducting a high quality research project. There was nothing she couldn’t do and nothing that could stop her.

Unfortunately, the love of her life and professor of cancer epidemiology Liam passed away from pancreatic cancer aged 55 years. The very same year SHE was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer that had already spread to her liver at the point of diagnosis.

It was admirable how she kept going during times of adversity. Her answer to cancer-related fatigue: ‘You have to expend energy in order to gain energy’. The only reason she stopped running was because her oncologist did not allow her to anymore when the cancer had spread to her bones. But that didn’t stop her getting a personal trainer, going for epic walks, spinning, cycling and so on.

Marylou was based in Northern Ireland where she received excellent cancer care. She transferred her care to Clatterbridge when she moved to Liverpool to spend time with her family and work as researcher for one year. Clatterbridge continued to provide top-notch cancer treatments which allowed Marylou to maintain a high quality of life and to stay as close to normality as possible. We would like to say thanks and hope to raise funds that will help push forward innovation and high standards of accessible cancer treatments.
