David Eales was a keen cyclist who saw the benefits of cycling for everyone & did a tremendous amount of work to make it available to anyone & everyone in the London borough of Ealing. Part of his legacy lives on through the Bike Hub, located in Greenford, which offers advice, courses, bike hire & refurbishes & sells 2nd hand bikes to name but a few of its services.
Sadly David died of a rare illness known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome. It's a rare condition arising from ‘over-reaction’ of the immune system to a trigger such as a mild infection or a medicine, leading to severe dermatological problems and also effects the surfaces of the eyes, mouth and throat. It is named after the two doctors who described it in the early 20th century. Whilst treatable, complications such as Sepsis can arise, which contributed to David's passing. I heard much about David & he was very encouraging when I first got my recumbent trike, answering my questions via Facebook. We met once & had a fascinating conversation about "all things trike." Sadly he became ill & died a few weeks later. However he made an enormous impression on me, resulting in my attempting the biggest cycling challenge of my life so far, the London to Amsterdam ride. Being a relatively rare illness, it's important to raise money towards researching better treatments & understanding of this most unpleasant illness, so I hope you will give as generously as you can.
