Over 150,000 of us in the UK have MS. It’s unpredictable and different for everyone. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We’re the MS Society. We understand what life’s like with MS. We're here for you through the highs, lows and everything in between. Together, we are strong enough to stop MS.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. On 9th July, I will be running the Leeds 10k to raise money for  the MS society. Many of you are aware of my inability to run long distances but I always wanted to do something to raise money for a charity close to my heart.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system . It is a demyelinating disease in which the myelin sheath(an insulating cover around the nerves) is damaged. The myelin sheath is required for our body to transmit messages and signals. When this is damaged, it disrupts the ability for parts of the nervous system to communicate. This causes a variety of symptoms for sufferers. Physical symptoms may include; visual problems, balance problems, fatigue, incontinence and stiffness/spasms. There is no treatment available  for  MS, just medication that slow down the progression.

On a personal level,  I have very close friends and family that are affected by this condition and I see how this can impact on people's lives. Working in the healthcare profession, I also see sufferers on a regular basis.

I remember being with my closest friend when she was investigated and diagnosed with MS. During her diagnosis I remember being distraught over what this may mean for my closest friend. I remember sitting in her mums workplace crying at what this could mean. That said, mostly I remember her strength and her drive to not only continue her life but to not let her condition stop her from doing the things she loves. She is much greater than I could ever be.
With that in mind the sad reality is that MS is a lifelong condition. MS has no cure. MS cannot go away when you don't feel the strength to face up to it.

I would be grateful if you could donate money that will help fund innovative research, fight for better care and support sufferers.

Thank you all so much for the support in raising money for this great charity!
