Story

Hi everyone!

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am fundraising for a charity called Lasallian Developing World Projects which I have now been involved with for over a year. The Lasallian organisation aims to develop education for children in third world countries by sending young volunteers from all over Britain to assist in the building of various schools. This year there are 8 projects taking place in India (x2), Uganda (x2), Thailand, Sri Lanka, Ghana and Kenya.

In July of this year, I will be part of a group of 11 others travelling to India, to the Tamil Nadu region, in a rural town named Panjampatty. We will be there for 5 weeks, aiming to assist local builders in the construction of an IT lab in a local all girls school. Opportunities for females in India still prove rare, and the chances of IT labs in schools will greatly enhance their future prospects.

Lasallian Developing World Projects is an extremely successful charity. The projects may be small, yet the volunteer's presence and help is never forgotten by the people they meet. Lasallian has developed unforgettable bonds with various communties all over the developing world for the 25 years it has been in existence.

I witnessed the effect Lasallian has on my recent project in Kenya in July/August 2010. I travelled to a group of 10 others to a town called Nyeri, 3 hours north of Nairobi. We stayed in a local all boys secondary school called St. Mary's. Kenya is a country known for poverty and a high number of children living on the streets. The school we were both living and working in ran a Child Rescue Programme, where it took children from the streets of Nyeri, and gave them food, housing and education. Lasallian has helped build classrooms for St. Mary's in the past, and we were there to continue this help to extend the school. Our time there saw us build 2 classrooms for pupils and an additional house for teachers.

It is the local people the volunteers meet on each of the projects who immediately make us realise just how grateful they are for the difference Lasallian has made in ther lives. I have witnessed this for myself in Kenya. This has what made me so inspired to carry on my involvement with Lasallian and do what I can to help in India in 2011.

Most importantly though, my experience would never have been possible without the help of various friends and family who helped me raised my funds for Kenya. I would like to ask you again to do whatever you can to help me with raising my money for India! I assure you that this money goes a long way and has an immediate effect on the lives of so many people in the developing world.

Any amount would be greatly appreciated, no matter how small! Thank you once again,

Marianne x
