At school Oscar has learned about refugees and why they may have to leave their homes. He would like to help. 

We did some research and found a charity who support them in York. Oscar decided to challenge himself to travel 10km around the track at the racecourse in York. Lucas has volunteered to join in too.

Refugee Action York (RAY) works with refugees, asylum seekers and migrants from within and around the City of York. We provide a safe meeting point where people can seek information and support, learn new skills and languages and form lasting friendships. Through providing this support we hope to empower individuals to assist them in rebuilding their lives. 

•    £12 will pay for a family to attend RAY’s Sunday Hub session, where the parents can learn English, the children can learn mother tongue Arabic or Turkish, as well as enjoying games and activities; adults can get information or advice about anything they need, such as immigration, housing issues, debt, domestic violence, or other queries they have; and the family can enjoy a shared meal with others, including volunteers & staff. 

•    £20 will pay for one child to attend RAY’s youth group for a month, giving them time to relax, see their friends and take part in different activities including sports, games and crafts. The youth group decreases isolation amongst young refugees and migrants in York, increases their confidence, and encourages a positive sense of dual identity.
