Marianne and I are joining a charity adventure: We are taking part at this year's Mototaxi Junket in Peru !

 

The Mototaxi Junket is a 3,000km adventure starting in Puno (South of Peru, close to the Titicaca lake) on the 7th of May 2011 and ending in Ayabaca (North of Peru, close to the Ecuadorian boarder) around 2 weeks later. This is a bit of a mad cap trip in which there will be 60 teams completing. The Mototaxi itself is a fantastically underpowered, tricycle-esque beauty! (a cross between a moped and a sofa).

 

Terrain is rugged. It’s mountainous. It’s desert. It’s jungle. It’s rainforest. Add to that a small obstacle called the Andes ; this promises to be a memorable adventure!

To make things easy, the fundamentals are: ‘no set route and no back up of any kind’.

 The point of all this madness? We aim to raise 1,000 pounds for the charity Practical Action.

Practical Action is a great charity, which, for over 40 years has been working closely with some of the world’s poorest people using simple technology to fight poverty and transform their lives for the better. Practical Action has a unique approach to development – They don't start with technology, but with people. The tools may be simple or sophisticated – but to provide long-term, appropriate and practical answers, Practical Action believes that those tools must be firmly in the hands of local people: people who shape technology and control it for themselves.
