Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Many, many thanks to everyone who has been kind enough to donate to what I believe is a very worthy charity. Knowing that so many people were supporting me made it possible to keep going through the tough parts of the day and finish the ironman in 12 hours 47 minutes last Sunday (split times of 1hr31 for the swim, 6hrs32 for the bike and 4hrs37 for the marathon). The monies raised will help fund the research that, hopefully, will one day help cure other people young and old suffering from brain tumours. I will post some photos of the event onto Facebook, but beware there will no doubt be a lot of neoprene and lycra featured J
I’m sure Eilidh would be proud of the funds being raised in her name, and from her family, myself and others that will benefit from your generosity, I can only once again say thank you.
Cheers
Mark

On Sunday 30th September I will be swimming 3.8km, cycling 180km and running 42.2km in the Barcelona Iron Distance Triathlon.

I am taking part in the ironman to raise funds for BrainTumour UK, in memory of Eilidh Perston, a friend who was diagnosed with a tumour in 2008 and who sadly passed away in 2009 aged just 19. Eilidh was a fun loving young girl who spent a great deal of time working for others, for which she was invited to Buckingham Palace with the British Red Cross for her work there, who won a place at NASA Space School and who was studying for a degree in Biomedical Science at Glasgow University.
Around 16,000 people are affected by brain tumours in the UK each year, but only 1-2% of all funds raised generally for cancer research goes to study this potentially devastating illness. Until very recently statistics on brain tumours were not recorded in Scotland and there was poor recognition of symptoms. Brain Tumour UK has highlighted the importance of early identification as part of its manifesto; Eilidh was diagnosed with dyslexia and migraines but had a tumour for what appears to be ten to fifteen years.
All funds raised in Eilidh's memory will go directly to Brain Tumour UK, and given Eilidhs interest in all things scientific, marked with the specific request that they be used for further research.
It has been a long year in preparation for this event, but a quick thought of the reasons behind it made those early morning swims and late evening runs a little more bearable. Probably should have done some cycling too....
Thanks again for your time and thank you in advance for any donations / support.
