Story

JOB DONE. London to Paris Cycle Ride completed on 5th September. 200 miles of riding over 3 days with some tough hills. Please sponsor me for what was a tough challenge! Check my blog for the latest news - http://mark-london2paris.blogspot.com/

Here's the story ..

Why Motor Neurone Disease

I'm supporting the Motor Neurone Disease Association because both my mother (at the age of 54) and my father-in-law (aged 72) were victims. That was over 20 years ago. There have been some advances in the research over the last year which might give more hope for future sufferers.

MND is a wasting disease that affects the nerves that control the muscles. As they cannot be used, the muscles deteriorate and waste away. The victims are usually reduced to dependence on wheelchairs and carers. It takes different lengths of time on different case; complete dependence can occur in 6 months to 6 years.

Some famous suffers from the past include Don Revie and David Niven.

Why Cycle London to Paris in September

1) I enjoy cycling and this will be a challenge

2) In December 2008 I broke my hip and damaged a knee in a cycling accident. The broken hip wasn't discovered until March 2009. This is a goal to define my recovery.
