Exeter Marathon 2023 · 14 May 2023 ·

We’re the charity which runs 54 libraries across Devon & Torbay. Our work helps to improve literacy and education, support people to develop skills and combats isolation. Every penny we raise goes directly towards library services that help make a difference to people’s lives and communities.

Story

My wife and a friend of ours set up and run Cullompton Code Club (shown above getting the 3D printer working). Running every fortnight this provides a safe environment for young people from across Cullompton and the neighbouring villages to learn how to code and have fun. Offered completely free of charge, this typically attracts a dozen or so girls and boys aged from the age of seven upwards.

My challenge

Running does not come naturally to me, but given that my job is desk based, I have always tried to get out in the countryside around Cullompton for a run or for a bike ride. This helps remind me how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country and constitutes some "me" time (mindfulness in modern parlance 😀).

What will the funds be used for?

The money raised will be directed to Cullompton Code Club through Libraries Unlimited.

£50 buys a Raspberry pi.

£200 buys a chromebook.

£400 buys a windows machine that can be used to operate the 3D printer photographed below. (See it in action printing a pendant designed by one of the coders: https://photos.app.goo.gl/XogwNSo6TAaaNy7W7.)

What is Code Club

For more information about Code Club, please check out this link: https://codeclub.org/en/parents

Cullompton Code Club runs on the first and third Saturday of the month and children can come along for all, or part of any session. No previous experience or IT equipment is needed.

We are always on the look out for new adult volunteers - if this something that you would be interested in then please drop in during one of the sessions. Again, no previous experience or IT equipment is needed.
