Story
Dear family, friends and colleagues,
Martha, beloved mother to Tariqa and Suheil, loving wife of Rajesh and a warm and dedicated colleague and friend to so many of us around the world was killed in a terrorist attack on the night of May 13, 2015, in Kabul, Afghanistan. She was there at the behest of the Aga Khan Foundation providing gender mainstreaming training to Afghan men and women.
You have shared in our grief and pain. Trying to make sense of this loss, we received suggestions from many of you about ways in which we could carry forward Martha’s legacy, especially her passion and commitment to gender equality.
Encouraged by the Governing Board and senior leadership of PRIA, and supported by many of you, we have decided to honour Martha by carrying forward her work in India and beyond. The Martha Farrell Foundation has just been established and you can visit us at www.marthafarrellfoundation.org. iPartner India is helping us raise crucial funds towards two initiatives that were closest to Martha’s heart and the funds will be deployed and monitored by the Governing Board of Trustees of the Martha Farrell Foundation in conjunction with iPartner India.
Over the past few years, Martha had pioneered a youth-led campaign to prevent violence against girls and women in public spaces. She called it Kadam Badate Chalo (KBC—‘keep taking steps forward’), focused on supporting both boys and girls to work together to overcome gender stereotypes and discriminatory practices.
Martha was also way ahead of her time when she pioneered a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, years before any legislation was enacted. She ensured that PRIA and all its partners commit to this policy. Gender mainstreaming was a concept she believed in passionately and worked hard to embed it within all the Institutions she worked with.
To carry forward Martha’s work, the Foundation will support initiatives that she had started and led, including the KBC campaign. In addition, we wish to provide scholarships, training and fellowships to young men and women to help them initiate ideas and programmes to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.
Please join us on this journey to honour her memory by donating generously to the Martha Farrell Foundation. We assure you that all the funds we raise will be used to carry forward the gender – just societies that was Martha’s dream.
