Back Up services include mentoring, wheelchair skills training and activity courses as well as support in getting back to work or school after an injury. We provide peer led tailored support to help people adjust to a spinal cord injury and inspire independence and confidence for a positive future.

Story

I have always wanted to take part in a marathon because it is a challenge and I enjoy endurance sports. London Marathon is a particularly great way to get into long-distance racing because it will make me feel more a part of the city I love.

I spend all my free time in Richmond Park training as much as possible. I’ve always found the support from friends and family a vital part of the training. The people around me help to motivate me by not accepting any excuses and by creating a competitive atmosphere during training sessions.

I am happy I will be doing this for Back Up as for me the Trust’s mission is to get people to do something with themselves rather than moan about how difficult life in a wheelchair is. I hope that by racing in the London Marathon I can show people that there is nothing that disability stops them from doing – some things just need certain technical adjustment.
