On the 16th of April 2015, the valuable work of the mountain and fell rescues associations around the UK was put into sharp focus for me when my climbing partner had a serious accident at Ilkley Quarry: http://www.ilkleygazette.co.uk/news/news_local/12909225.Climber_is_injured_in_30ft_fall/
Some of the very first people on the scene were from the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (http://www.uwfra.org.uk/) and I have never been so pleased to see a red jacket in my life! Their professionalism, compassion and care was brilliant. They actively helped the Fast Responder and paramedics to treat my friend and facilitated a very smooth transfer to the ambulance. But they also did little things, like making sure I was was OK. Quite simply, the attendance of 17 of their members made a very bad situation, as good as it could be made.
The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association is funded entirely by donations and public good will, so, both as a gesture of thanks and because I think the work of this and the other MRT teams is so invaluable, I have decided to run the Hardmoors Saltburn 10K Trail race (which is, as far as I can work out, 11.7K with 227m of ascent) on the 16th August in order to raise some funds for the organisation.
I don't really like asking people for money, but this is sometime very close to my heart and I would be grateful for any sponsorship people feel they can contribute. smile emoti
