This Autumn I’m walking a marathon on the south coast (yikes 26.2miles in one day) for Maternity Worldwide! 

At Maternity Worldwide we have a vision of a world where all women, wherever they live, can I’ve birth safely and without fear. 

Tragically, every year across the world 287,000 women die in pregnancy and childbirth. That’s one mother dying every two minutes every day of the year.

The death of a mother has devastating effect on her children, her family and community. Each year more than a million children lose their mother as a result of her death in pregnancy or childbirth. These children are up to 10 times more likely to die prematurely than those living with a mother. 

These women do not need to suffer and die, most lives could be saved relatively easily and cheaply. 

Maternity Worldwide’s current projects on Africa are making a real difference to the lives of women and their families. We address the barriers women face when trying to access safe childbirth using a sustainable integrated approach to make a lasting difference. We:

-train and employ midwives so they are able to provide safe births for mothers now and got the future

-improve access to health centres and hospitals with rural health centres and motorbike ambulances

-we run income generation schemes enabling women to earn their own money

-we provide maternal health sessions for communities so that they are able to identify risks associated with pregnancy and seek medical help early
