Story
Hello!
In September I'm starting a 12 month Engineers without Borders UK Volunteer Placement with Mass Design Group in Kigali, Rwanda. Before I go, I am aiming to raise £2,200 as a commitment to Engineers without Borders that will help them continue the important and inspiring work they do!
So, what do they do??
Engineers Without Borders UK partners with organisations and communities around the world to increase access to engineering in water and sanitation, clean energy and built environments. Over the past five years, through their international work, they have contributed a staggering 160,00 hours to projects, supporting the delivery of engineering infrastructure and the research and development of sustainable technologies. The charity also works in schools and universities throughout the UK to encourage young people to explore the most pressing human development issues, and inspire them to reflect, discuss and realise how they can be part of the solution by becoming engineers.
Their partner organisation Mass have a mission to research, build and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity. They are designing and building schools, hospitals and low- cost housing in Rwanda, Uganda, Liberia and Malawi. However, there's a shortage of qualified engineers and engineering expertise across East Africa and Mass are in need of support to train local engineers and build their engineering capacity so they can develop sustainably.
During my placement I'll be training the permanent engineering design team in building services and environmental engineering as well as contributing to the the design of socially conscious and low environmental impact buildings in Rwanda. I will also spend two to three months in Monrovia, Liberia, to work on the construction of a new hospital where I will support local engineers and project administrators during the building services installations.
As part of my fundraising, I'll be doing my first long distance run - the Thames Meander Half Marathon on 11th August. I'm not a runner so your donations will also encourage me to keep running!
