Story

Thanks very much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 21st July I am aiming to complete the 'Satmap 10 Peaks Challenge'. This is a run/walk to summit the top 10 highest peaks in the Lake District, Cumbria over a total distance of 73 km with over 5,600 metres of ascent and only 24 hrs in which to complete it! For more information on the challenge, please visit the challenge website:

I want to dedicate this challenge, on behalf of my sister, Helen, in memory of her late father, Tony who sadly passed away when Helen was just 3.

Tony had a long and suffering end to his life due to the struggles of a brain tumor and the recovery of then basic treatment and after care of radiotherapy and large amounts of painkilling drugs. All of this resulted in the paralysis of the left hand side of his body until the day he passed away.

For over 4 years my Mum was a mother to 3 of us children, breadwinner and carer to Tony whilst he was battling the disease, therapy, the paralysis and other side effects of strong drugs.

This meant Mum couldn't keep to a full time job due to having to care for Tony 24 hours a day, who was constantly in and out of hospital due to relapses and therapy visits, sometimes to be told there were literally just days left to live.

As you may appreciate, this constant routine is devastating to any family, both emationally and also financially, who find themselves in a similar situation.

At that time, support for cancer patients and families was not as well resourced or as widely available as it is today, often provided by the local clinics, or Cottage Hospitals.

We were lucky to perhaps have a nurse at our home for just a few hours per week, in contrast today Marie Curie, support hundreds of families for days at a time, to help them help themselves and try to at least get some normality into their lives during this most challenging time..

Please help me to help Marie Curie continue with their valuable work to sufferers and their families.
