Matt vs Fred: a charity challenge that neatly incorporates 3 of the defining parts of my life.
In 1989, at the age of 10, I beat cancer. 25 years on I still make an annual visit to the Doctor who treated me, and get to witness first hand the bravery and courage of those still fighting the disease.
After being so ill, I spent a lot of my teenage years riding and racing bikes, becoming pretty fit and successful at it along the way. I’m sure any budding psychologist would be able to tell you that was some kind of response to what had happened before.
Most of those miles were ridden around The Lake District - undoubtedly my favourite place in the world. I grew up there, got married there, and look forward to teaching my Son all about it.
And so, on May 11th I’m riding the Fred Whitton challenge - widely regarding as the toughest ride in the country, and helping to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. With 112 Lakeland miles to ride with over 13,000ft of climbing including Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose passes. It’s going to be brutal.
I’m not asking for much - so any donations you can spare will be hugely appreciated.
