Story
My name is Matt Phelan. I am General Practitioner with a special interest in Palliative and End of Life Care. I live in Dorset and as well as working as a GP also work at the inpatient unit at the Weldmar Hospice Care Trust.
Palliative Care is my primary professional interest - the care and support of people with a life limiting illness. It epitomises why I became a doctor: treating the person as a whole, meeting their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs, and relating to the families and friends who care for them. I have always felt privileged to be involved in patient care at this definitive time.
Qualifying for the World Championships Ultraman Triathlon has been a personal goal for the past few years. An international field of forty athletes, of which I will be the only English participant, will circumnavigates the Big Island of Hawaii over 3 days - 6.2 mile swim, 261.4 mile bicycle ride, 52.4 mile run.
Weldmar Hospice Care Trust provides specialist care and comprehensive support for patients with life limiting illnesses, their carers and families. Their dedicated teams of staff and volunteers are an inspiration to work with in both the inpatient unit and in the community.
