Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On June 24th in 2013, I lost my beautiful mother after a 6 year battle with Severe Alzheimer's/ Vascular Dementia. I cannot put into words the suffering that not only my mother but her close family had to go through in the final 2 years. Losing the ability to express herself through speech as the time went on: my mum would pace up and down the hall for hours until she would fall to the floor out of exhaustion. Forgetting how to talk, hold a knife and fork, pick up a glass, leave the house... Her life and our life changed dramatically!
Constant care from my Dad and brothers was not enough and sadly medication and a mental health unit was the only thing we or the doctors could do. My mum would walk around in circles screaming whenever someone would come into vision or close proximity - a feeling of loss, sadness, utter fear and frustration of not being able to express herself. Constant 24 hour care by 2 carers for 6 months before moving to a specialised care home where I padded the room to stop my mum walking into the wall. You would grasp any signs that she knew you were in the room with her or holding her hand when she lay down from exhaustion. Months of deteriation, weight loss and physical abilities continued until my mum was to weak and her brain had lost the ability to remember how to swollow food or fluid. A week of my brothers and I sleeping and staying in the room with her 24/7 comforting her and reminiscing about old times to remind her (cognitively aware or not) of her life until she passed away in the early hours of the morning with my Dad at her side.
The cruelist of diseases that is currently incurable and kills you slowly from the inside. Losing yourself from the inside!
We hope that with enough money raised and brilliant minds searching for a cure - this heart wrenching disease will be eliminated from our lives.
My Mum was a ray of sunshine to not only her family but whoever she met. Her motto was "Every Day Is A Good Day" and she lived her life to the fullest!
Just in my lifetime - I was lucky enough to live on a 36ft wooden boat and sail the Mediterranean for 3.5 years at the age of 5 - and was home taught in every way. At the age of 12 our journey continued as we cycled 6,000 milestone Broadstairs to Egypt as a family!
Everyday I think of my mum and every day I try to encapsulate her motto!
These concerts will continue each year and at the end of the year I will transfer the total amount raised to this vital charity.
