Mount Kilimanjaro Trek 2017-2018 · 26 December 2017 to 4 January 2018 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

RIP Mum - N: 21/03/1942 - M: 06/12/2017

Memory of Maria (MoM) - Machu Picchu

Sadly my Mum, Maria, lost her battle with Alzheimer's.  I am determined to continue raising money in memory of my mum and challenge myself to many extreme measures.

Therefore,I have decided to take on another challenge this year to continue to raise awareness.  Next destination..Machu Picchu.

Throughout the year I will take part in:

12 x 10ks
3 x Half Marathons
1 x 10k Assault Course
Three Peaks Challenge
Machu Picchu

I will have covered over 1000km of training and competing by the end of 2019.  My Schedule is included in the pic below.

I will update progress after every event.

If you wish to support my journey and challenges this year, then please, do make a donation.

God Bless

Memory of Maria (MoM) - Kilimanjaro

This is my mum, Maria.  She is dying.  She is at what they call "Late and final stages" of Dementia.

My dad is my hero, he is 80 and is a full time carer to my mum.  My mum has been in bed now for three years, the doctors only gave her weeks to live back then.

She is has been kept alive by being fed and watered through a syringe daily. Are we prolonging the inevitable? Is this cruel? We cannot just stop feeding her.

My mum had a kidney transplant 33 years ago and managed to live through this maintaining a strict diet. Myself and my dad played a part in saving her life twice when she had complications through her dialysis.  The sad thing is that we cannot do anything to save her now, we feel hopeless.

My mum has a strong heart and is very much loved.  We believe she is in the best environment, at home around people who love her dearly. We mourn everyday as we watch my mum deteriorate over time.  We have to remain strong as a family unit.

Me and my mum have a strong bond. I miss her terribly, her laugh, smile, singing, sense of humour, her love, her hugs, her slight mis-pronunciation of the English language and of course her cooking! I miss her it hurts. The funny thing is, when I close my eyes i can still clearly hear her voice.

I sometimes meet my mum in my dreams and she appears normal, laughing, joking and i am able to hold and squeeze her again.  When i realise i am dreaming i just do not want to wake up.

We are no different to many families that go through this, not necessarily just with Alzheimer’s. I am merely sharing another story that others can relate to.

I have registered  to  do the Mount Kilimanjaro Trek on the 26th December for 9 days to raise awareness for Dementia in support of the Alzheimer’s Society.

My Target is £5,000 which i have to try and achieve by September 2017.  I will not be able to do this alone this is why i am dependant through the channels of social media to see if anyone can give a little to help me reach my target. I will also look to raise some money throughout the year.

The Society has already raised £47 million of pioneering research across the UK into Alzheimer’s disease.

Your contribution funds research into the causes of Alzheimer’s, scientists are building a detailed picture of what happens in the brain in the disease.

This is essential for improving diagnosis and developing new treatments to stop it. Alzheimer’s can only be defeated through this research.

I have set up this just giving page in "Memory of Maria" (MoM), if you would like to donate (even a little now and again) then follow the link below and please share this post it would be very much appreciated.

I will keep this page updated with my progress.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
