In 2009 Henry Surtees died when an errant racing car wheel hit him on the head during a race. Had the wheel been an inch or two higher, or to the left or right, this incident would have been laughed-off as a close shave. Such is fate. Henry's father John was the John Surtees, the only man to win the World Championship on two wheels (for MV Augusta) and four wheels (for Ferrari). Already in his 70s, he could have hidden away and grieved forever but, being John Surtees, he vowed to spend the rest of his life raising money for young people with head injuries. IMPORTANT: not racing drivers (this is NOT a racing driver charity) but everyday young people injured in accidents. John Surtees died last year, aged 82, but not before he had raised hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds in his son's memory. The Air Ambulance Service, hospitals (needing specialist equipment) and local centres dealing with head injuries are the principal recipients. With John gone, his two daughters have taken up the mantle and the Henry Surtees Foundation continues to raise huge sums for young people in urgent need of help. On 22/23 September I am running 10K followed by cycling 50K alongside a few of my 60 year old chums (hence 60@60!). This is a tough challenge for us "old boys" (not least as the cycle ride starts with a two mile hill) but last year we raised over £8,000 between us. If (when) I reach my target of £250, my company (Shell-Clad) is going to match it with another £250 so any contribution, however small, is VERY MUCH appreciated. Thank you.
RIP Henry. You are much missed.
