Story
Did you know there are at least 1.3 billion people in the world that do not have access to modern energy services? I find this to be unacceptable in the 21st century. I am not alone: 2012 is the UN International Year for Sustainable Energy for all, which has the goal of universal access to modern energy by 2030.
I think this is achievable, and that is why I am going on an overseas placement with Engineers without Borders UK to work with partner organization Global Village Energy Partnerships (GVEP). I will be working on the Developing Energy Enterprises Program, which develops small businesses across east Africa that provide improved energy services.
Through EWB and GVEP, I hope to contribute as much as I can and learn as much as I can, so that I can have an impact on improving energy access both during my placement and afterwards. This placement is a continuation of what I am working on for my MPhil degree at the University of Cambridge in the Centre for Sustainable Development, and also builds on over seven years of volunteering history with Engineers without Borders Canada (all in Canada!). I will be bringing the knowledge and skills I have now, but looking to build that knoweldge and skills as well as my understanding of the dynamics of energy in east Africa dring my placement.
Most of my costs are covered by EWB UK, but I need to raise 600 pounds to defray the costs of the placement (my time is free!!)
I hope you will support me in this by donating through this page! Any little bit counts!
Much appreciated,
Micah
