West London Dental Centres Dental charity volunteer trip to Burma (Myanmar)

Dental charity volunteer trip to Burma (Myanmar) · 26 March 2020
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I made my first volunteering trip for Burmadent in 2013. When I returned home from that first visit I was determined that I would try to do as much as possible to help the Burmese community access urgent dental care, and to educate them to avoid sugary foods and to clean the teeth regularly. Sugar is cheap in Burma whereas meat is not, so many foods are heavily laced with sugar products. Often there is a total unawareness of the need to clean the teeth or avoid sugary foods/drinks. We often see children aged just 3 years old with multiple abscesses needing extractions.
However, in the last 6 years I have returned annually and have seen clear improvements in the children that we had previously treated- so although the need across the country is huge, we feel proud that we have treated over 7000 patients who otherwise would have had no access to urgent pain relief from dental disease. The communities are always extremely keen to learn, and our messages of oral health education are changing behaviours.
Our next trip (no 7) will be a two week expedition in March 2020. My dental nursing colleagues and I will travel back to areas that we have been to previously, including a shanty town in Yangon at a makeshift medical clinic run by a medical charity Medical Action Myanmar- treating the poorest in the community, including many HIV positive children and their parents; various villages around Lake Inle, a remote Monastery four hours south of Lake Inle, as well joining the Burmese Chief Dentist on one of his own expeditions in the remote communities outside the Government capital.
We could not undertake this work without your continued support. If you could help us to develop our work by making a donation, you can be assured that every pound raised is used directly to return to Burma and carry out the ongoing essential work for the local impoverished population.
Thank you
