Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In September 2012 I'm going back to Kenya as part of the Excellent Development Sand Dam Expedition to assist a local community construct a Sand Dam.
I was fortunate enough to spend some time in Kenya in September 2010 helping to construct a Sand Dam. A sand dam is a simple concrete structure across a seasonal river bed that over a few rainy seasons fills up with sand. This sand not only filters the water but also prevents evaporation and reduces the amount of parasites. The aim of the project was to provide a sustainable supply of clean water and free up time for women who then can spend more time cultivating crops and free up time for children who have spend a great deal of time finding and collecting water so that they can attend school. The water supply along with associated terracing and tree planting helps prevents soil erosion and enables subsistence farmers to grow more crops
As a Civil Engineer I have spent twenty two years of my working life designing and building infrastructure projects in the United Kingdom and other parts of the developed world, all of which have improved people’s lives in some small way. This Sand Dam will have more impact on the local community than any previous project I have ever worked on. Being involved in the project has changed my outlook on life, and I am proud and humbled to have been involved in a project which will improve the lives for so many and will last for generations to come.
