Story
On Saturday 17 June 2023 along with colleagues and supporters of the Roundhouse we will take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise funds for our work with young people. The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge is a circular walk which encompasses three major peaks in the Yorkshire Dales, Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, the best-known hills in the area. Make no mistake, it's a tough challenge with over 1600m of ascent, 39.2km in distance, all to be accomplished within 12hrs. And just to say my training to date has been limited so Im going to need all the support and encouragement I can to get through it!
So that's the challenge now the why support me bit...
Well I'm raising money for the Roundhouse's work with Young People. We hear from young people that its tough out there, tough getting a job, tough dealing with the cost of living crisis and tough accessing support and affordable space.
The Roundhouse is a space for young people to come together, learn creative skills and to turn their creativity into a career. We make sure our spaces are affordable, inclusive, connect them with other young people and above all - as we hear from young people - it feels like home. Often when home isn't always a place they can be.
Plus we know it works. In our report, Creating Futures, out of the nearly 200 young people surveyed 96% were in employment, education or training and 91% accredited this to their experience at the Roundhouse.
"You need to be able fail in a place where you can identify
what went wrong rather than going out into the world and
not necessarily having anyone to support or back you up,
or not knowing who to refer to.
Ultimately, there’s only one Roundhouse in the UK: a
place which gives you creative opportunities, networks
and a belief in yourself. It’s like the building itself holds so
much magic, and had I not stepped into its magic, my life
would probably be very different. For the scene and for the
culture, this building is so important. It allows it to thrive
in a safe, friendly and secure environment." Ray, Roundhouse Alum.
