Cycling home from school one day & my youngest daughter started saying a list of random words, I asked her what she was saying. "My reading, mom" was the answer I got. No, my love, that's not reading, that's memorising. She would do the same with the books we read at home. She knew the words that belonged to the page we were reading. She memorised books! Paying closer attention to new books, I realised she was reading some words from right to left. Only then did I approach the school & tell them what I thought. It took some convincing as she is a highly intelligent child & was keeping up in class. It also didn't help that she was reading in something other than her home language. Finally, it was agreed to have her tested. Result: high IQ, but 2 years behind her peers in reading! Since then, it has been a battle to get the full support she needs to thrive. 

Too many children have fallen through the gaps of standardised testing at school or teachers unable to recognise dyslexia and come out the schooling system feeling less than adequate. It is vital to provide training to teachers to recognise, support & empower the capabilities of those individuals who are dyslexic.
