Willowbrook Hospice - Moonlight Walk 2011 · 4 June 2011 ·

Willowbrook Hospice, an independent charity covering St Helens & Knowsley in Merseyside, aims to enhance the quality of life, and relieve the suffering of patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses by providing Specialist Palliative Care for those in need and support for their carers.

Story

3 Years ago my step mum of 23 years was diagnosed with Breast cancer she underwent Chemotherapy and we were over the moon when she came through the other side however in 2009 she started to complain of stomach pain which never seemed to go away, She spent majority of 2010 in hospital where they controlled the pain and underwent an operation to sort out the pain once and for all, Unfortunately this was not the end of it, Joan had Cancer once again “life is a rollercoaster” from this point on.

After Joan had spent months being cared for by hospital staff it was suggested that she went into a hospice! Let’s face it we all know what people think a hospice means!!! So we were shocked when we found that it was a home from home somewhere Joan could go to build her strength up with the specialist care Willowbrook could offer before returning home.

Willowbrook Hospice is a very relaxing place where you know your loved 1 would be cared for in the right way. The team of Doctors and Nurses are amazing they catered for Joan’s every need & nothing was ever to much, they gave Joan and our family all the support we could possibly have needed, the doctors were on hand for us all to ask questions and they would answer them honestly and straight to the point which we all know you wouldn’t get that in hospital.

But On December 23rd Joan came home were she can continue to improve with the support of my wonderful Dad and district nurses. She is doing well but as with everyone in Joan’s position she has good and bad days. She is enjoying being in her home surrounding, spending time with her husband, 4 Kids, 4 Fabulous Grandkids she absolutely adores along with her family and friends.

All this has been made possible by Willowbrook hospice and the staff, who care for people over eighteen years of age with life-limiting illnesses living in the St Helens and Knowsley area.

As a Charity, they make no charge for their services, but rely on fundraising and a modest contribution from the NHS. This enables them to provide support to patients and their families according to their individual needs.

Since the Hospice opened in 1997, they have cared for over 4000 patients. During that time their services have grown so much that they now receive over 850 patient referrals a year.

Fundraising is essential for the future of Willowbrook Hospice. The cost of providing there specialist care is £2.3 million each year. They receive a third from the local PCTs however the remaining amount has to be raised through fundraising initiatives.

Therefore i am asking you to support me in a 10k Moonlight walk by Giving As Much As You Can which will be donated to Willowbrook Hospice.
