Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Michaela's father Dr Keith Randall died a few weeks ago. He was a wonderful man and worked his adult life as a pathologist. He had choroideremia. This is a rare x linked single gene condition which affects the retina. It causes night blindness and progressive visual field loss. Throughout his life he was hopeful there would be a cure.
Researchers at Imperial College have identified the missing gene. Animal studies have been promising. Surgeons at Oxford will soon start a pilot trial. The retina will be detached and the correct gene implanted into the back of the retina. The surgery is not without risks but hopefully it will arrest the condition and save sight. The Department of Health is supporting this pilot but it is all very expensive. The gene is transported in a viral medium and is manufactured in the USA
In a few weeks our nephew Nick will be among the first to have this surgery and perhaps if it is successful Mark will be able to have it in the future.
Mike Michaela, Mark and Matt are walking 15 miles through the night on the Fight for Sight Carrott Walk on September 23rd to raise money for this condition. Your donation will go exclusively to the Tommy Salisbury Choroideremia Fund.
