Story
Fiona and Mike first walked into Maggie’s Edinburgh in late 2005. Fiona had just been told that the breast cancer that had first arisen and been treated in Australia in 2004 had come back.
Amid the fear, anger, confusion and questions it was a haven. While the fantastic medical team across the road did everything that they could to support Fiona’s body, the team at Maggie’s became close and trusted friends who would listen, question or give you a hug if that’s what you needed and made sure that you never felt that any of this was your fault or that you were alone.
Fiona and Mike continued to make extensive use of Maggie’s until Fiona’s death last year; Mike still sees one of the counselling team every month.
Fiona was a passionate supporter of Maggie’s.
In 2008, and while still undergoing treatment, Fiona and a team of friends completed the Maggie’s Monster Bronze, a 32 mile cross country cycle and a 10 mile cross country walk. To this day none of us know how Fiona managed it physically, but she was a determined young woman and was so happy when she raised over £4,500 for this special cause.
Perhaps Fiona said it best when she wrote for our 2008 Monster Bronze fundraising: "I do not know how we would have got through the last few years without the support of Maggie's Edinburgh. We have had a lot of very difficult days and they have always picked us up, given us good advice and showed great compassion and understanding for what we were going through. Being diagnosed with cancer three times and all the hardships associated with it is draining on every level and it is difficult to find people who really understand . Maggie’s does this.”
Mike, Gillian and Steven are looking to emulate Fiona's efforts and are attempting the Martin Currie Rob Roy Challenge - Schiehallion's Shadow - "a tough test of stamina and endurance hiking 14 miles from Kenmore and then climbing out of the shadow of the mighty Schehallion mountain on a 56 mile cycle route". Yikes!
