Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Once I heard about the Liverpool Triathlon I just thought that I had to have a go. With the advancement of years I felt that if I didn't have a go now then perhaps I never would. The opportunity to compete within the boundaries of some iconic Liverpool landmarks was too good to miss. I did leave it a few weeks before registering hoping I'd find out that the maximum number of participants had been reached but apparently the more the merrier. So I'm in.

The effort that I'll need to put in to the swim section of the event links rather nicely, if macabrely, with a potential end of life experience. I am really fond of the RIver Mersey and, like an uncle of mine, I've considered having my ashes gently cascade from the ferry as it traverses between the Pier Head and Birkenhead. As swimming is my weakest discipline the concept of donating my live but flailing body to the Mersey is a real possibility. It's quite dispiriting in the local pool trying to keep up with the maturer ladies doing breaststoke who are discussing local events whilst I'm trailing behind from doing front crawl for all my life's worth.

To give you a feel for the scene for the swim I've attached a picture of Queens Dock were the event is being held. If anyone is thinking of selling their house I'd try to get hold of the guy who took this photo as he's a genius and can make anything look good. There is no way that the water has ever looked that blue.

Just to make it clear I am not doing the full Olympic Triathlon distances. I am undertaking what those very humourous organisers have called the "Sprint"! This involves a 750m swim followed by a 20k bike ride and then a gentle 5k run.

I'm not bothered about a time although it would be nice not to be last when I look up the results. My own projected times put me into contention with the Ladies 60-64 year old group from last year. I have considered trying to improve all my kit but I'd have to spend more than I could raise for the charity. So rather than upset all the spectators along the route by competing in one of those figure hugging specialist triathlon all in ones I suspect I'll just use some old football kit I've got knocking around.

If you are around the Pier Head/Echo Arena on Sunday June 27th come down and encourage all those competing - I'll be too knackered to acknowledge you but I'll think kindly of you.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to The Children's Adventure Farm Trust and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

My employers, Cargill, will match any funds I raise (up to a maximum of £500) so I hope that's an extra incentive to be generous.

So please dig deep and donate now.
