‘Shine Across The South’ 

I intend to walk 227miles from the Oncology department at Derriford Hospital Plymouth, Devon, to the Shine Cancer Support office in Poole, Dorset, along the South West Coast Path.......as fast as I can! 

I aim to raise awareness and funds for Shine Cancer Support. To encourage more men with cancer to seek support earlier as a preventative measure and not just in response to a crisis.

Hi! I’m Mike, I’m 44, married with two young children and I have an incurable bone marrow cancer called Myeloma. Living with incurable cancer caused a number of losses including my career and very nearly my family life as cancer, the gift that keeps on giving, also caused depression and PTSD something I’d never experienced before. I’d been a Royal Marine Commando and then a Police Officer for 15years. Mental health problems can affect anyone but if any one was mentally fit and strong it was me.....or so I thought! It took me to near rock bottom before I accepted it and then rebuilt my life to where I am now, happy in myself, happy in my life and happy that I’m still alive kicking cancers ass down the road......every day!! 

Shine Cancer Support is a large part of that process. Through Shine my personal aim is to encourage more men with cancer to beat stigma and seek out support earlier.......and not to do as I did!!

Shine Cancer Support is a small charity with networks, in different parts of the country. Shine support young adults, men and women, aged 20-49, who have or have been diagnosed with cancer. Shine ‘get it’ and it’s personal too. The networks are run by local volunteers for local people as we all have that disease in common and know what it’s like to live with it.

I am now volunteering for the Shine network in Dorset and want to raise awareness that Shine is there, ready, to help and support more adult men and women with cancer across the country.

To do this Shine needs funds and I want to raise as much money as possible by pushing myself as much as possible for this small charity which is run by incredible dedicated people who are giving the help every day to young adults with cancer.
