Story
This is a huge challenge for me – walking 100km in 24 hours from London to Brighton, with just two months to train. Oh and, for those who don’t know, I haven’t taken on a serious physical challenge since I had a metal plate and pins put in my ankle three years ago. So yeah, it’s gonna be tough going.
Why am I putting myself (Robocop ankle included) through this torture? Because I work for Sightsavers, an international charity that fights avoidable blindness in the developing world, and I want to do something on my own time to contribute to our vital work. Did you know that 80% of blindness in the world is avoidable, meaning either the person can be cured or their blindness could have been prevented in the first place?
It costs just £8 for eyelid surgery on someone with trachoma, an eye infection that is an excruciatingly painful way to go blind. And it costs just £28 to restore someone’s sight through a cataract operation. That’s a round of drinks these days! Imagine seeing the sunset, or your reflection in the mirror, or your grandchildren for the first time EVER, and it only cost £28?!
So please, help us transform people’s lives by giving whatever you can afford to give. You’ll also get to make me suffer physical torment, which I know some of you will enjoy immensely.
Thank you!
