Sheer madness: the Jungle Marathon at 67! However, “I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane” (Waylon Jennings).
Having missed out on Operation Long Run 2013 due to illness I will be making amends by attempting to complete the Jungle Marathon in October of this year.
The Jungle Marathon (www.junglemarathon.com) is considered the toughest endurance race in the world (CNN poll) and is a 250km race through prime Amazonian jungle. The race has six stages, the longest being in excess of 65 miles, and consists of jungle trails, swamps and swimming across two large rivers complete with crocodiles, anacondas as well as other assorted nasties. I will not be ‘racing’ but merely trying to finish. 40% who start don’t make it! At 67 I will be the oldest to attempt to finish it. There are some YouTube links below which you may find interesting.
Once the race has started competitors are given only water; everything else needed for the seven days, food, shelter, clothing and emergency supplies has to be carried by the competitor.
I am attempting this piece of madness on behalf of Catching Lives in Canterbury and anything you contribute goes straight to the charity and will be very much appreciated.
