Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

As some of you may know I've been selected to represent the city of Leeds in the Grand Finals of Miss Great Britain 2010. To be held on 4th December, I will be competing against 59 other girls from across the country for this prestigious title.

But the final is definitely about brains as well as beauty and to celebrate this I'd like to raise as much money as possible before the final for our chosen charity Maggie's Cancer Centres. Having experienced the loss of family members to cancer this is a cause close to my heart, as I'm sure it is to most people.

Maggie’s aim

Our primary aim is to help people to live with, through and beyond cancer. Our centres are for anyone affected by any type of cancer at any time; minutes after diagnosis, through treatment, post-treatment, during recurrence, or years down the line.

Our wide ranging support is practical, emotional and psychological, you can find out more at www.maggiescentres.org

All of our services are free, funded by donations, grants and fundraisers. Last year our centres received 80,000 visits. That number is going to increase as we open more centres to help more people.

Cancer Research and treatment is improving all the time, as is cancer awareness, so more people are living with, through and beyond cancer; yet it is a life changing experience and they need help and support along the way, as do those who might not make it through.

Maggie’s Centres make a difference, sometimes small, sometimes huge. People have described them as ‘life changing’ and even ‘life saving’ in the case of one man who received a diagnosis and was going to drive off a bridge; instead he drove to our Dundee centre.

It costs an average of £350,000 per annum to run one of our centres, which equates to around £24 per visit. So every pound counts.

I hope you agree this is a great cause worthy of as much support as possible. I will hopefully be undertaking a number of events before the final to add to the donations on the site, so please dig deep. And at the same time you will be supporting me in my Miss Great Britain bid, as the fundraiser with the largest total will be given the title of Miss Charity and fasttracked to the final 20, an amazing honour.

Many thanks

Rebecca xx
