From www.youngminds.org.uk :
YoungMinds is the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the emotional well being
and mental health of children and young people.
Rapidly societal changes have not all been positive for children and young people – many
are likely to grow up in broken or dysfunctional families, be the victims of crime or be
coping with drug and/or alcohol issues – not necessarily their own. Often demonised by
society thousands of children and young people are isolated, unhappy, have eating
disorders and self harm, some even commit suicide.
• One in three children in every classroom has a diagnosable mental health disorder and
that’s just the ones that have been classified
• One in five show signs of an eating disorder
• One in 12 harm themselves
• Two young people kill themselves every day.
There is still a huge stigma around mental health which means children and young people
are not getting the support they need. Disruptive, difficult, withdrawn and disturbed kids
need to be supported and not just ignored and told off. Investing in services and support
for young people not only reduces misery and loneliness, but saves millions in future costs
to the criminal justice system, NHS, education and social care costs.
Driven by the experiences of children and young people, YoungMinds campaigns:
• to improve life chances for children and young people at risk of, and experiencing
difficulties with mental and emotional health
• to achieve better outcomes for parents and families who engage with children and
adolescent mental health services
• to promote the good mental health and emotional well-being of all children and young
people
YoungMinds provide:
• A free phone Parents Helpline offering confidential support, advice and information for
adults concerned about the mental health of a child or young person.
Call 080880 2 5544 10am – 4pm Monday to Friday and 6pm – 8pm on Wednesdays.
• A comprehensive website (www.youngminds.org.uk) with information specifically
designed for children, young people, parents and professionals.
• An extensive range of information leaflets and booklets for parents, professionals and
young people on specific mental health issues.
• An award winning, bi-monthly magazine – essential reading for those interested in
children’s and adolescent’s mental health, including: CAMHS professionals, teachers,
nurses, clinicians, youth workers, parents, consultants and everyone working with or
supporting young people.
• Specialist training on children’s mental health and wellbeing to professionals.
• Awareness training to schools and youth services in London.
Our vision is of a society that promotes and protects good mental health for all children and young people. A society where children's views are respected and they are loved, safe and enjoy life.
