Kerala (India) Trek · 21 October 2018

The Chronicle Sunshine Fund provides specialist equipment for children with disabilities or special needs, to improve the quality of their lives. The fund is helping North East children in special schools, learning units, hospitals and also individual families.

Story

On October 22nd 2018 I have volunteered to do Trek Kerala (India) for the Sunshine Fund with TravelEyes. It is 5 day trek through the Letcmi Hills, evergreen shola forest, montane forest, grasslands, the ridges of Western Ghats, reaching the two highest peaks in South India and the highest tea estate in the World.

What is unique about this trip?
I will be there accompanied by a blind or partially blind independent traveller each day. I will be there to make the trip more accessible for them by guiding and describing the sights to my companion, 6-8 hours each day. This will open up Kerala to my intrepid visually impaired traveller by sharing my vision.... I am thrilled to be able to do this!

Why have I chosen to support this charity?
The Sunshine Fund is a local Newcastle charity that supports children with disabilities in the North East of England providing them with specialist equipment that isn't supplied by the NHS or Social Services.

Some of you may know that my 8 year old son Abhinav was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2012. He struggles massively with communication, he is unable to express himself which often results in him becoming frustrated. He has a small bank of words that he can use when encouraged. He struggles with working out social norms, keeping himself safe, interacting with other kids, and has sensory issues. e.g he can't tolerate certain noises or materials on his skin.
Despite all his difficulties, he is the most loving and inspiring child ever! He has made his sister and I more patient, tolerant and better individuals as a result.

He is our world!

One major area my boy excels in is Mathematics! (nothing like me his mum).                                                  The Sunshine Fund over the years have provided Abhinav with specialist IT equipment that has allowed him to access educational material at home, allowing him to flourish in our home environment as well as at school!

Now it's my turn to GIVE BACK to this amazing local charity. The annual trek is their key fundraising event.
As this is all about charity, any donation no matter how big or small will be greatly appreciated. Your support will allow a child like mine to benefit from equipment that will improve and enhance their lives.

The trek is a year away but I have a significant amount of money to raise, so fundraising is starting now!

Thank you for your support!
