North East Ambulance Service Paramedic Team Leader Daryen Lemmon will be swimming alongside Student Paramedics Matt Curtis, Scott Gibson, Rachel Hewitt, Dave Bage and Kevin Hamilton to help raise funds for local charity 'Fighting All Cancers Together', (FACT).

On Tuesday 11th October 2011 between 8am and 8pm, local hero, Olympic and Commonwealth Champion swimmer Chris Cook is being joined for a charity swimming event by local TV presenters and celebrities including Katie Gornall (BBC Look North), Simon O'Rourke (Tyne Tees), Kim Inglis (BBC TV & Radio, SKY News), John Beresford (Newcastle United), Jeff Brown (BBC Look North) and Ian Payne (Tyne Tees).

In 2005, at the age of 34 years old, Joanne Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer, in fact on her daughter's 2nd birthday whilst her son was only 7 years old. Joanne is only too aware of the impact that a diagnosis of cancer within a family has. No matter who the patient is, all family members are affected.

However, Joanne believes it is not all a negative process. "Since my diagnosis, I have been overwhelmed by true kindness, loyalty and friendship. I am a great believer in keeping a positive attitude, and in this I am not alone. I have come across so many marvellous people, offering fantastic support and services to cancer patients, and their families, often as a result of their own experiences".

After holding fundraising and support awareness events independently, Joanne has received numerous letters, emails and telephone calls, saying how much people have enjoyed the events, and how useful they have been to them.....and asking for more!

As a result of her experiences since her diagnosis Joanne founded Fighting All Cancers Together (FACT) providing help, support and social opportunities for people going through the cancer journey, and their families and friends.
