London Marathon
3rd October 2021

Running in Memory of Steve Thorogood– ‘STEVO’

26th April 1982- 29th March 2018.

Fundraising for St Claire’s Hospice.

My story with Steve started the best part of 18 years ago when he joined our Sunday morning football team.

What followed was a lasting friendship, firstly as a team-mate then frustrating the life out of me at times as his team manager when I hung my boots up. There was never any doubt about Steve’s talent; just he never scored as many goals as his ability merited.

The team was a tight-knit group which led to some greats days and nights out socially (Faces nightclub as part of Xmas celebrations an abiding memory) – these occasions Steve never missed and was always great company.

To say Steve was a diamond would be doing him a massive disservice. He was, without doubt, one of the nicest people I have been privileged to meet.

His carpet business was thriving before his tragic illness took hold. I am proud to say he had, by that time, kitted out my whole house; his work mirrored him as a person – classy, trustworthy, dedicated and someone who took real pride in his work.

For the 2021 London Marathon, I am running for St Claire’s Hospice, in memory of the great man, who is survived by his lovely wife Hannah and young son, Harry.

St Claire’s Hospice provided immeasurable support to Steve, Harry, Hannah and their family in the last few months of his life. They helped Steve to be pain free, secure and in a home from home environment, so that he could spend quality time with Harry, surrounded by his family and his friends.

Whilst it feels like I have trained for two marathons over the last couple of years due to the cancellation of last year’s race, training has gone reasonably well ahead of the 26 mile challenge in October.

I would be grateful for any donations to help support St Claire’s and just as importantly for the memory of ‘Stevo’ - a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, taken ridiculously young and forever missed by so many.

I will leave the final words to Hannah – “Our lives are overwhelmingly sadder without him. Steve, you will always be in our thoughts and forever in our hearts

Thanks in advance for your kind donations, it is much appreciated.
