What is Raleigh International?

Raleigh International is a charity established with the purpose of giving young people a chance to explore the world and by doing so discover their potential as leaders and members of a team, working together to make a difference.  Raleigh is committed to inspiring people from all walks of life, of all ages and nationalities, involving them deeply with people, places, communities and challenges and empowering them to be all they can be.  Raleigh is also committed to working in partnership with local communities to make a much needed difference to their lives.  These commitments are furthered through expeditions to those communities.

What are Raleigh's expeditions?

The expeditions are made up of three types of projects: community projects, environmental projects and tough adventure treks.  All are designed to be challenging, life-changing experiences.  Expeditions are currently being undertaken in Malaysian Borneo, India and Costa Rica & Nicaragua.  Each project is led by volunteer managers, working in conjunction with in-country permanent staff.  Project teams live and work in basic conditions in tough environments.

What will I be doing?

I will be going to Malaysian Borneo as a Volunteer Manager on a three month expedition in June 2010.

Why am I Volunteering?

I applied for the role of volunteer manager on a Raleigh International expedition because I   was looking for a new adventure and a new challenge.  I love travelling and seeing different parts of the world and was thinking of going on another trip, but I wanted to do more than just travel for travels sake.  I wanted to do something positive and constructive and to make a difference to some of the communities I would otherwise simply pass through.  Going on expedition with Raleigh gives me the opportunity to do just that and to see those communities from a different perspective, whilst also developing new skills.
