Story
Hi my name is Jon from New Stoke Newington Shul.
My grandmother and great-aunt managed to get out of Germany in April 1939, just in time. They only managed to escape because of the Kindertransport and the generosity of those who funded it and so enabled it to save their lives and the lives of so many other children.
They were only 13 and 14, two young girls who, much like the children in the camps in Calais, were forced to leave their homes and were only looking for somewhere they would be safe. My grandmother will celebrate her 90th birthday this month. In being able to come to Britain she was given the chance to build a life, the children in the camps in Calais have fled war and persecution and surely deserve a chance to do the same.
There are an estimated 150 unaccompanied children in the camps with family in the UK, who have the legal right to claim asylum here.
Safe Passage UK (www.safepassage.org.uk) is a legal route for them to be reunited with their families, and afforded the care and safety they deserve. To make this possible, Citizens UK needs to raise £2,000 per child.
There is an urgent need to make this happen - the camp in Calais is signalled to be demolished this Autumn. These children are likely to go 'missing' and we fear for their safety and lives.
