Story
Nina and I have used Footprints conductive education centre since she was only a few months old. It has been a life line! Staff here provide focused activities to support Nina's development. More than this they provide a safe space to build relationships with others that understand the ups and downs linked to living with Down syndrome. Nina has made strong friendships with other children in the group too.
To provide context, each term has a theme, most recently it was 'winter'. Nina has her own personal goals and the staff support her with specific activities to enable these to be met. This is shared in a small group setting with parents supporting the activities guided by staff. Example activities include: speech development with phonics and singing, fine motor activities such as threading, cutting playdough, gross motor skills such as walking or obstacles, social interaction, arts and sensory play, self-care such as feeding, drinking, brushing teeth, and so much more...
So what impact has this had? Nina took her first independent steps at footprints! Has spoken many new words, learned phonics, explored lots of activities and accesses equipment I do not have at home.
For me they have become much more than a charity, they are close friends. We have shared a lot of laughter, celebrated Nina's achievements (small and large) often resulting in everyone shedding a tear with delight! Also offering comfort and a much needed hug at times too.
So running a half marathon is my way to try and give back and support them to continue long after Nina leaves for school this September. A half marathon for me is no easy distance. My body likes about 2/3 miles, so this is not going to be a breeze! Please support this cause and donate what you can. Nina and I will forever be grateful!
