We Support families of children with cancer to Help families get quality time together

Story

We are devastated that leukaemia stole our beautiful Naomi on the 6th of May 2011...thankyou everyone for your amazing support during Naomi's 3 month treatment... also for your continous support for myself, Elliot and our family.

I'm raising money for PACT (Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia) and I'd really appreciate your support for Naomi and PACT.

NAOMI ELLA:

January 2011 Naomi had developed small red petechiae rash on her shins and neck.

Her shins ached and she had developed bruising on her legs, arms and feet. She was feeling abit tired and she was 'out of breath' when she was playing football.
...

Naomi played for Sheffield United Community Ladies and actually played in a match only 4 days before being diagnosed. She had trained at Sheffield United centre of Excellence. She played for her school team as well as been picked  for Derbyshire Schools County U16s football team.
ღஐƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒஐღ
Naomi was very fit, healthy and sporty, she loved lots of sports and had just learnt to ski. She was about to continue  to do A level PE and Biology with her twin Elliot, as well as History and Psychology.
ღஐƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒஐღ
Naomi was FULL OF LIFE ...always singing, dancing, laughing, joking, doing impressions and playing the guitar. She was known for her jokes and kindness to others.
ღஐƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒஐღ
Naomi Ella Smith was (still is)...a beautiful, funny, bubbly, clever, sporty, talented, much loved unassuming young woman.
Everyone who was around her before missed these qualities while she wasn't there; battling AML in hospital.
Her best friends & year group made three support videos for Naomi and held Naomi's Night to raise funds for her and the ward.
Even when Naomi was suffering, she still managed to show the people that only knew her in hospital what an amazing, funny, brave girl she was.
ღஐƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒஐღ
She has made an impression on everyones heart.
She has left an enourmous Naomi shaped hole in everyones life

Naomi had Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.
Unfortunatly Naomi's Leukaemia was resistant to the cycles of high dose chemotherapy, so she needed a rare mixed race bone marrow donor.
Her twin brother was tested immediately but unfortunately was not a match. A global search was started. Weeks later an adequate cord blood donor was found.
They couldn't get Naomi in remission.
Naomi never got the transplant.
Our gorgeous girl lost her life 06/05/2011

I am very grateful to all people who looked after Naomi and tried to save her life. This includes the Consultants, the wardstaff and the support such as the Social Workers, Clic Sargent, and PACT.

Alot of people when Naomi was diagnosed wanted to do something for Naomi and still ask who can they donate their money or fundraising to ( including doing sponsered swimming, climbing, bike rides,running... ) Alot of fundraising has already been done for Sheffield Childrens Hospital and Ward M3 and Naomi xxx

As a heartfelt thank you, with lots of help from friends of Naomi and me.... i'd like to raise funds for PACT, who are a charity based out of Sheffield Childrens Hospital.

PACT has grown from an organisation offering children's outings to one that provides wide ranging support to children and families who are being treated by the Oncology Unit at the hospital.

Today PACT has many aims and goals:

PACT is currently working to raise £670,000 for a new Day Care Cancer Centre at the children's hospital.

The state-of-the-art facility has been designed with input from patients, parents and clinicians.

The facility will be self-contained with its own access. This means that day care and inpatients will be in the same facility so can be transferred easily if their condition changes, and that both inpatients and day care patients have ready access to the same support services. As it is self-contained, it also means that patients will be separated from the rest of the hospital and there will be less risk of picking up infections from other hospital patients – which is always a concern for immuno-suppressed cancer patients.
It’s purpose built so it has the right facilities. It has 5 times the treatment space of our current clinic, a large family room for inpatients and day care patients, and space for PACT staff, social workers and clinicians. The layout has also been designed so that parents with emotional news don’t have to go past other patients and parents after counselling or clinical review, giving families time to collect their thoughts.

a) Family Support, including close family contact and holiday accomodation at local resorts for well deserved rests

b) Accomodation for those that require stays at the hospital in a house a few minutes walk from the hospital

c) Research Funding via sponsoring of scientific staff, nurse support grants, and purchase of vital equipment

PACT can be contacted directly via pact@sheffch-tr.trent.nhs.uk.
