In January this year my darling nephew Vinnie at the age of 18 lost his very brave battle with leukaemia. He was diagnosed just 9 months before. When he was first being treated he was at Poole hospital (Dorset UK) on their Durlston ward. Although the staff were amazing the ward itself was not geared up for teenagers. Being in hospital for days at a time and not even having wifi to talk to friends and family was very hard. There was also nowhere for parents to sleep so my sister resorted to sleeping on the floor many times.

My sister Tanya and brother in law Carl decided to start travelling 40 miles away ( a one hour drive) to the Southampton teenage and young adult cancer ward. The facilities are amazing with private rooms where parents can stay, a social area to hang out with friends and play xbox, watch tv, play snooker. Such small things but when you are having Chemo and feeling so ill and little bit of normality is welcome.

As Vinnie became worse the travelling became too much so my sister Tanya quit her her job and business and stayed in Southampton with Vinnie in his 200sq/ft room. When Vinnie caught infections they would both be stuck in this room for weeks at a time so nothing was spread to the other patients. My brother in law Carl still had to make the one hour journey as well as working and running the house.

Vinnie throughout his ordeal was so strong and determined, he never let it get him down even when his whole body was screaming in pain. I've never seen anyone be so brave despite going through so much. Vinnie also got diabetes because of all the drugs so had to inject himself every day.

After lots of different chemo's we were given the devastating news that it wasn't working and Vinnie only had 2 weeks left. I sorted out my own family here in Hong Kong and jumped on a plane but my poor tired Vinnie couldn't hold on anymore and passed away while i was in the air, sat cuddling his mum and dad and little dog dusty.

Vinnie had a saying throughout all of this and that was "Just take one day at a time". He could never have known how much that saying has helped so many since he left us.

Now is where i need everyones help to make Vinnie's dream a reality. His dream was to build a teenage cancer unit at Poole hospital so other families do not have to go through what my family did. So friends and family can visit easily, so parents have a place to stay and so the teenagers suffering from this awful disease can have some normality. My amazing sister, brother in law and friends and family have raised a whopping 20k GBP ( $200,000 HKD) in 4 short months!! But now we need another 50kGBP (500,00HKD). I just know with everyone's help we can do it!!!

I have decided to cut my very long hair off into a bob and donate the hair to The Little Princess trust in the UK to make wigs for children with cancer going through chemo. They really do help change these children's lives and give them some normality after loosing their hair.

Myself and my family would be eternally  grateful for any donations to make Vinnie's dream come true. Please also feel free to share the link, it would be amazing to not only have the UK and Hong Kong help but the rest of the world as well.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story

Tasha xx
