Story

In October 2012 I will be embarking on a crazy challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Over a 7 day period I will be covering 350miles on a Mountain bike travelling from Nairobi in Kenya to Ngorogoro in Tanzania. Using some roads and some dirt tracks I will be travelling with a group of people who have all been touched by cancer in some shape or form, overnight we will be sleeping rough in tents in African terrain, hopefully the lions, rhinos and elephants will leave us alone!!

Taking in desert, rough savannah, wooded bushland, the foot of the largest freestanding mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro and finishing at the largest intact volcanic crater on earth, the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is home to a spectacular concentration of wildlife, including zebra, wildebeest, elephants and the densest-known population of lions.

This is a tough challenge which will test our determination and patience as we adapt to the climate and take on the rough terrain of Africa’s wilderness.  We will be cycling along a mixture of good tarmac roads and rough dirt tracks, through vibrant towns and villages with a chance to experience Maasai culture. We will be challenged by the searing high day time temperatures and overnight frosts that are common to the region.

Why am I doing this?

It has been estimated that more than one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their life. Last year my Dad unfortunately became one of those people who would lose their life to this dreadful disease. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, or a loved one has, you’ll want a team of people in your corner supporting you every step of the way, that’s where Macmillan Cancer Support come in. They provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care. Whether it’s the nurses that provide exceptional care and help people through their treatment, the experts at the end of the phone helping in all matters support or financial, the volunteers offering day to day support or the campaigners pushing for better treatment for cancer patients, Macmillan are the support network with patients and families every step of the way.

This is where you hopefully come in. I am funding the majority of this trip myself so as to make sure that everything I raise can go straight to Team Macmillan and straight into helping their causes. I want to raise between £4,000 and £5,000 which is a tough ask but with your help I hope that I can get there.
