Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Back in 2015 my mum was diagnosed with multiple myeloma with a very poor prognosis at that time. While there are a number of effective treatments to control myeloma, there is currently no cure. 4 years on and it has been a battle but she is still living an independent and enjoyable life thanks largely to the work of organisations like Myeloma UK. This kind of work is only possible due to the donations of many people in the past so I thought I should do my bit and raise some money to help advance treatments even further.
Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a blood cancer arising from plasma cells. At any one time there are around 17,500 people living with myeloma in the UK. It accounts for 15 per cent of blood cancers, and two per cent of all cancers. Myeloma mainly affects those over the age of 65, however it has been diagnosed in people as young as 20.
Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma, and their ultimate goal is to find a cure. They continually strive to improve standards of treatment and care through research, education and raising awareness.
By running the Liverpool Rock n Roll Half-Marathon we (Team Barrowcliff) are raising money to help Myeloma UK achieve their goal in finding a cure for this disease that has affected 2 of our family members.
